“The Boyfriend” started off as a one-act musical comedy. Its success led to its growing into fuller proportions and it took soon place as one of the mail attractions in the theatre world. It was written by Sandy Wilson and first produced in London at the Players Theatre April 14th 1953. It then with a transfer to Wyndham’s Theatre and a total of 2,084 performances established itself as one of Britain’s longest-ever running musicals. The original cast included Anne Rogers as Polly and Anthony Hayes as Tony. The scene is the Côte d’Azur (French Riviera) and the story is about a rich pretty pupil named Polly Browne who’s without a partner for the carnival ball. Polly has always been seen as just another fortune hunter but then she meets Tony. Tony is nothing but a messenger boy and he thinks Polly is only a secretary. Together they plan a blissful and penny-pinched future together. Before the carnival Tony suddenly vanishes and Polly thinks her dream of love has flown. To her surprise, in the finale Tony returns and the truth comes out. Tony appears to not be a messenger at all but actually a British lording and it seems like Polly will have her blissful future after all.
