The first musical of the Love and Peace generation. Hippie teaching on war, theology, authority and sex.

Hair” opened first time October 29th, 1967 at Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival Public. Hair was the 4th longest running musical of the 1960's, and at one time 7 road companies were touring the U.S at one time. There was a revival of the show done in 1977 but it only ran for 1 month.

When first staged in the late 60’s, with provoking titles as “Sodomy”, “Hashish” and “Coloured Spade”, its naughty language and with its nudity Hair shocked the audience. By the creators Hair went under the name “the American tribal love-rock musical” and it soon became a cult even though some people thought it was guaranteed to die with the 60’s. It was also filmed with Treat Williams and Beverly d’Angelo in the leads as Berger and Sheila.

Lots of movie and musical stars launched their careers in Michael Butler’s hit musical “Hair”. To name just a few we have Elaine Paige, Paul Nicholas, Diane Keaton, Meat Loaf, Donna Summer and Richard O’Brien (composer well known for his “Rocky Horror Show”).

The show is about young Claude Bukowski who joins the US Army as a volunteer to fight the Vietnam War. On his way to his destination he has a couple of days off in New York where he in Central Park meets a gang of hippies, and a lovely young woman named Sheila. Claude is about to experience a community he has never known before and which is very different to his own lifestyle. The gang leader Berger and his friends Woof, Hud and Jeannie take Claude to places he has never been before, and the show takes a turn when suddenly Berger, by accident, is  the one  facing a certain death in the Vietnam War.

Jack played "Hud" in the Mountview theatre schools production. Hud is one of the members of Bergers hippie tribe. He has a child with his girlfriend (who's not actually part of the tribe), but is also possible father to Jeannie's coming baby.
